The Mayoralty of Petropolis, a Brazilian city, promotes a course related to Bitcoin and Ethereum. In addition, several trainings will be offered, including basic computer science in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) of that city in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

With these measures, the mayor of Petropolis hopes to train its population on issues related to science and technology. Courses will be offered to people over 12, who will not have to pay for training.

The City Hall informed that this year more than 100 people enrolled in the courses. By 2020, they expect greater population participation, estimated at almost 200 thousand people, according to IBGE 2010. Petrópolis is tourist city north of Rio de Janeiro.

Training in Bitcoin and Ethereum

Certainly, the new digital economy has already caught the attention of the rulers of Brazil and the world. Composed of digital currencies, mainly Bitcoin and Ethereum that are the two most capitalized, the cryptocurrency economy arouses interest.

This is because, as a novelty of 2020, the Mayoralty of Petrópolis, said it will offer classes on cryptocurrencies. The topic will be discussed in the third module of the course on financial education.

The initiative highlights the City Hall of Petrópolis, as it is not common for a public body in Brazil to place this issue in the course of courses offered to the population. The professor, Carlos Daniel Montes, said the course will address the basic concepts of technology.

We will talk about the main virtual currencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum which are the best known, virtual currency mining, its history and how to acquire and market these currencies in virtual exchange houses.

Currently in the cryptocurrency community, there is an extensive debate about the attributes of medium of exchange and value reserve of these digital assets. Bitcoin as money would have both functions, but there are those who criticize the aspects of value reserve. The medium of exchange is a way of using money as an intermediate reference in a transaction.

Examples of this debate are Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin SV, which emerged after stating that Bitcoin would be only a medium of exchange. However, the currency would be more a reserve of value with little use as a medium of exchange, in the vision of its creators.

For the Petrópolis City Hall, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are means of exchange. Blockchain-based technology, as far as it is concerned, would be responsible for validating and recording transactions made on public networks.

In summary, the course offered by the CERT contemplates a teaching of a disruptive technology. In addition, the concepts addressed in the presentation show that students will be trained in technology, beyond the price speculation that this market involves.

On the other hand, not only the City Hall has been promoting the crypto initiative, there is also Petrobras, the Brazilian oil company, which launched a university research program focused on blockchains to develop solutions in the industry. Apparently, the Brazilian Government increasingly takes into account the adoption of blockchains and the contributions that its technology gives.
