At this point, the profitability of cryptocurrency cannot be denied as its use on the global stage has increased in the last decade and also because many major firms across the globe are investing heavily into cryptocurrency such as Facebook, JP Morgan, and IBM. This has helped to not only push discussion about cryptocurrency to the forefront but this has also acted as a testament to just how much money there is to be made with crypto.
Now MasterCard, one of the biggest firms in the world, has also joined the bandwagon and a job listing from the firm dated August 2, 2019, shows that they are seeking talent in the cryptocurrency-related field and this has led to a discussion about them potentially entering the crypto wallet space.
The job listing in question is for the roles of director project management – cryptocurrency wallets, director, product development and Innovation – blockchain Solutions architect and VP product management – blockchain crypto. This extensive list of roles available shows that the firm is looking to enter the blockchain space as well as a cryptocurrency wallet space.
A peculiar thing to note is the roles of product management and product development and Innovation which heavily implies that leadership will be needed for a team that will develop blockchain-based solutions for the company. This draws parallels to Facebook buying out several blockchain-related firms and hiring a plethora of talent within that space ahead of the launch of the Libra token. No announcement was made at the time but it did seem to confirm rumors of the token being in development and Facebook soon confirmed this news themselves.
MasterCard’s interest in cryptocurrency and blockchain is not new as in 2018, the ranked third on the list of firms in terms of blockchain patents that they held so clearly the firm sees the potential within that space and seems to be making the move towards bringing in talent.
This also shows how lucrative professions within blockchain have become and there is greater expansion within the industry but not quite as many professionals being trained to fill the gaps in time.
Hopefully, MasterCard will be giving an official word about their new development soon and we could be looking at the next big thing in the crypto and blockchain space.
