Though some of its most famous application has been in the world of commerce and finance, blockchain has been applied to the game and entertainment industry in recent times. One of the most common ways that this has happened has been the use of blockchain to create collectible cards and other such games in order to prevent any fakes from flooding the market. There have also been a number of blockchain-based online games that work in the same way as traditional games but leverage blockchain technology to improve the experience for the players.
No, it seems a new blockchain-based card game that is based on a best-selling gamebook in the 1980s will be coming soon and this is due to a collaboration between Microsoft, major game developer Eidos and gamebook firm Fabled Lands.
The gamebook series that these new products will be based on is called “The Way of the Tiger,” written by Jamie Thomson and Mark Smith and this was announced via a December 1, 2019 press release. The new product to be released will be called “Arena of Death” and will see players fight in a fantasy team world with features from the original gamebook.
Thompson, who is also the CEO of Fabled Lands, stated that he went on board with this project because he believes what his vision will be translated better through a blockchain game than a traditional video game.
“We were going to relaunch the series into a computer game format but this new technology (blockchain), just made more sense. Imagine playing Magic the Gathering but knowing if you owned a card, it really does belong to you. Or if we say there are only 100 editions of an item or skill, you know there really are only 100 editions,” he said.
The game will then make use of non-fungible tokens on a blockchain in order to ensure the ownership of assets within the game and will also aid the creation of in-game items without having to deal with the cryptocurrency side.
